Health Services

Transylvania provides a combination of services to meet students’ basic health care needs.

Liana Smith, campus nurseA registered nurse is on campus Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. to provide routine care and first-aid treatment. The health office also serves as a resource center for health-related topics and referral to other health services, including the University’s counseling services. The office is in the back lobby of Forrer Hall across from the Department of Public Safety.

Additional health resources are readily available, but students or their health insurance providers must cover the fee for these services.

Hospitals and Emergency Care

    Lexington has many fine private hospitals and a major regional medical center at the University of Kentucky. Students requiring acute emergency care are usually sent to Samaritan Hospital, eight blocks from campus. Emergency care is minutes away through the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Fire Department’s paramedic squads, and each Resident Assistant is trained in basic first aid and CPR.

Student Health Insurance

    Transylvania students may purchase an accident and illness insurance plan that is advertised by the University, or they can be covered under their family’s plan. The University strongly recommends that each student have health insurance coverage, be aware of any restrictions, and have a copy of their current insurance card.

Wellness Programs

    All students are encouraged to participate in activities that promote wellness. To help them achieve a balance between academics, social activities, and physical well-being, Transylvania offers health education programs (stress reduction), organized physical activities (aerobics and intramural sports), and classroom courses (Lifetime Fitness).
