"Mathematics: A tentative agreement that two and two make four."
--Elbert Hubbard |
Transylvania offers a major and a minor in mathematics. Our curriculum is designed to prepare you for graduate school as well as provide the quantitative skills needed for other majors. There is much cooperation between the math program and other programs at Transylvania, and classes can be arranged to accommodate your particular career interests. Our faculty will assess your math skills and help you plan your major.
The mathematics department prides itself on working closely with students. There are several opportunities for faculty-student interaction both inside and outside the classroom including extra-curricular activities, lectures and conferences, problem-solving session to help students prepare for the Putnam exam, faculty-led independent research projects, and movie nights.
Mathematics is essential to almost every discipline, and the skills that make a good mathematician apply to almost every field. People who enjoy math generally are persistent, have good reasoning abilities, and have the ability to apply basic principles to solve problems. Our outstanding faculty members are committed to developing these skills in our majors and minors.
Mathematicians are employed in a wide variety of fields: engineering, operations research, actuarial science, economics, finance and computer science, to name a few. Many of our students pursue second majors or minors in a compatible field to take advantage of this variety.
