Transylvania is committed to keeping its campus safe. Working together, the University's professionally trained Department of Public Safety (DPS), well-qualified residence life staff, and students help ensure that individuals and their possessions are protected. The efforts have been successful in keeping the incidence of on-campus crime very low.
Department of Public Safety Officers
DPS is located in the back lobby of Forrer Hall, the main women's residence hall. DPS officers are commissioned as peace officers through the Secretary of Justice. The officers annually attend training provided to them by numerous agencies. They are certified in first aid, automated external defibrillators and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Officers patrol the campus by foot, bicycle, and automobile 24 hours a day.
DPS officers work closely with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies and attend meetings with their counterparts from the Lexington police department, the Fayette County sheriff's office, Kentucky State Police and the University of Kentucky Police Department regarding common problems and criminal activity in the area.
Campus emergencies can be reported by dialing 8118 from any campus telephone or 233-8118 from off-campus. Red emergency telephones are located in all administrative and classroom buildings and in several outdoor campus locations. Lifting the receiver on these phones automatically connects the caller with DPS.
Campus Surveillance
Public safety dispatchers, on duty 24 hours a day, monitor 109cameras positioned across the campus. Most residence hall entrances are monitored by camera, and all are connected to a central alarm system. Dispatchers have direct radio access to campus safety officers and to local fire and police departments.
Escort Service
Public safety officers are available 24 hours a day to escort students or employees by car, golf cart or on foot within approximately one block of the campus.
Lighting
Transylvania's campus is well lighted, especially parking lots and frequently traveled pathways. The physical plant staff inspects facilities regularly and responds immediately to reports of potential safety and security hazards.
Parking Regulations
Students are allowed to park vehicles on campus, provided that the vehicles display a valid parking permit obtained from DPS, which also issues parking regulations booklets.
Daily Log
Information regarding the Daily Log may be obtained by contacting the Office of Public Safety, 300 North Broadway, Lexington, KY 40508-1797.
