Excellence in the Classroom

Transylvania will open a myriad of opportunities for you to challenge yourself academically, explore your interests, expand your knowledge of the world, and accomplish anything you set your mind to.

Small class sizes

Small classes give you the chance to work one-on-one with your professors, ask questions, and get personal, detailed explanations. Our student-faculty ratio is 12:1 and more than 50 percent of our classes have fewer than 20 students.

The small-class experience is all over Transylvania. Many classrooms are set up roundtable-style to promote discussion and collaboration, and classes often meet outside. Your botany class might walk around campus looking at native plants, or your history class might tour Lexington's historic neighborhoods.

Outstanding faculty

You won't find any teaching assistants at Transylvania — instead, your classes, including labs, are taught by professors. 96 percent of our tenured and tenure-track faculty members hold a Ph.D. or the highest degree in their field.

Our highly qualified professors have chosen to teach at Transylvania because of its collaborative, cross-disciplinary atmosphere. They will encourage you to ask questions and express your viewpoints. They will take a personal interest in your individual success. And, thanks to our small classes, it's easier to find time to meet with your professors outside of the classroom.

Liberal arts curriculum

A liberal arts education looks for the connections that exist between many areas of academic inquiry. Because Transylvania students are exposed to the full spectrum of human knowledge, they are well-rounded and better equipped to handle a rapidly changing world.

Are you unsure of your major or minor? There's no rush to make a decision at Transylvania. With 36 majors, more than 30 minors, and pre-professional preparation in eight areas, including pre-law and pre-medicine, you'll have the chance to find a major that fits you. You can even design your own.

Unique calendar

Transylvania uses a distinctive calendar.

You'll take four courses during each of the regular 14-week terms (fall and winter), followed by a four-week May term that lets you concentrate on one class. Entering first-year students get a head start toward academic success during August term. This three-week program includes classroom discussion of books and other texts, plus a variety of student life programs that will orient you to college and the Lexington community. You'll even earn a course credit before the upperclass students come back to campus.

Study abroad

At Transylvania, the world is your campus. More than two thirds of our graduating seniors study abroad, whether for one term, the summer, or a year. By studying abroad, you get first-hand knowledge of other cultures and countries, and an opportunity to experience life in another part of the world.

Most students study abroad during May term, an intensive academic experience that lets Transylvania students focus for four weeks on a particular subject of study. Many May term courses are travel courses, and recent courses have traveled to places as diverse as Iceland, Argentina, Ireland, the Philippines, Israel, and Egypt.
