Nearly 90 percent of Transylvania students participate in community service or outreach. Through these activities, students build social awareness, gain leadership skills, and learn about the world around them. This process starts with our First-year Urban Program, in which students spend a week of intensive volunteering with multiple Lexington service agencies. Many other programs and activities take place throughout the year, enabling students to prepare themselves for more than just a career after graduation.
Transylvania invites the community onto campus for many summer camps and activities, including the Governor's School for the Arts. Our esteemed Kenan lecture series is open to the public, as are our many theatrical productions, musical performances, and art exhibitions. We also have many partnerships with our neighbors, the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning and Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bluegrass.
We encourage our students, faculty, and staff to question social inequalities of the world around them, and find ways to effect change. We believe that any definition of the liberal arts includes an element of outreach and service, both personally and institutionally.
